The Global Resilience Institute is hosting a community resilience research flash talks and networking event on Monday November 6th, 2017 12-2pm (lunch provided). The event will feature a series of short 4-minute flash talks by individual researchers highlighting their research related to community resilience. The presentations will be interspersed with time for networking and informal discussions so that new connections can be made and new ideas can emerge. The goal of the event is to showcase the breadth and diversity of community resilience research across campus and also to make new connections, explore new ideas, and catalyze new collaborations.
A Diversity of Research on Community Resilience
Strengthening community resilience requires reducing vulnerabilities, enhancing social networks, and investing in social infrastructure and the built environment that underpins communities. Recent disruptive events in Puerto Rico, Houston, and Charlottesville reveal many weaknesses within our society that detract from community resilience. Efforts to identify systemic challenges that erode social capital and provide remedies for overcoming those challenges need to be integrated into efforts to strengthen community resilience. These challenges include disparities in access to education, housing, transportation, health services, and jobs along with racism, sexism, homophobia, and fear of immigrants and others who may be different. This event showcases the diversity of research at Northeastern related to strengthening community resilience.
