Essential but Unseen: How Social Capital + Infrastructure Solve Problems

May 4, 2023 at 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm

Current Opportunities — Alfred Deakin Institute

About the Event:

Societies around the world face a wide spectrum of problems including climate change, polarization, and terrorism. While many policy responses focus on top down, government driven solutions, Aldrich instead pushes us to look at the often overlooked but critical systems which drive behaviors and attitudes. Our networks of connections – known as social capital – and the places and spaces that build them – social infrastructure – hold the potential to mitigate these shocks and even transform our societies. Using qualitative and quantitative evidence from his research around the world, Aldrich argues that we should be looking at bottom up, community-based strategies to tackle our hardest challenges.

This event will be held in-person at Deakin Downtown. We welcome you to join us at 5.00 pm for refreshments prior to the event commencing at 5:30 pm.
