SUMMARY:Resilience Lecture: Cuba’s Emerging Economic and Socio-environmental Alternatives to Enhance Post-pandemic Resilience
DESCRIPTION:About the Lecture: \nPlease join Yociel Marrero Baez for a discussion on Cuba’s emerging socio-economic alternatives and post-pandemic strategies to promote sustainable growth and stability on the island. Yociel will provide an overview of Cuba’s response to Covid-19\, as well as the development of new ventures that are emerging as the island recovers from the pandemic. As the Director of the Environmental and Consumption Program of the Antonio Núñez Jiménez Foundation for Nature and Humanity\, he has been a leading member of several projects aiming to open the economy to the private sector and reform Cuban society. Yociel will thus discuss the importance of strengthening U.S.-Cuba collaborations and promoting socio-environmentally responsible business management as a fundamental element of resilience – especially in the context of Covid-19 as well as future natural and man-made threats. \n  \nAbout Yociel Marrero Baez: \n \nYociel Marrero Baez is the Director of the Environmental and Consumption Program of the Antonio Núñez Jiménez Foundation for Nature and Humanity. As part of this program\, he develops strategies for socioeconomic alternatives that contribute to the sustainable development of Cuban society. He completed his undergraduate studies in Moscow as an environmental engineer in Havana. Marrero completed his master’s degree in Integral Management of Eco Technologies at Humboldt State University in California\, USA. \nFor more than 10 years\, Marrero has worked in Havana’s Great Metropolitan Park as the director of research and development\, leading the sanitation program of the Rio Almendares Basin\, for which he received an important Architecture and Engineering Award. He is an active promoter of new economic models and consumption standards\, and has advised similar projects in the Dominican Republic\, Colombia\, Argentina\, and Brazil. Additionally\, he has given lectures and courses at several universities including\, the University of California in Davis and Berkeley\, North Carolina State University\, Yale MacMillan Center\, New Haven\, CUNY\, the Ecole des Ponts in Paris\, the University of São Paulo in Brazil\, University of Santa Fe in Argentina and the Technical University of Pereira\, Colombia. \n  \nThis event will take place on Wednesday\, June 30\, 2021 11:00 AM — 12:00 PM EST.
