The International Role of the United State Coast Guard
GRI’s Founding Director, Stephen Flynn, has been asked to be a witness at The Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee’s hearing about the international footprint of the US Coast Guard.
The purpose of the hearing is to examine the unique authorities of the Coast Guard that allow it to interact with other foreign states to address maritime issues in a manner that the Navy, as a military force, cannot. The goal is to emphasize the need for greater Coast Guard efforts at capacity building to encourage other flag states to develop/strengthen their own Coast Guards and what can be done to strengthen the Coast Guard’s capability to lead cooperative high seas law enforcement initiatives (e.g., IUU fishing, anti-piracy, maritime domain awareness, etc.)
The hearing will take place on March 12th at 10:00 am in For more information and live video feed of the hearing click here.
