Protecting the U.S. Power Grid from cyberattacks | Foreign Affairs

Cyberattacks are becoming more sophisticated by the day and, as described in an article authored by GRI Senior Research Scientist-Cybersecurity and Resilience Rob Knake, the U.S. power grid and other critical infrastructure remain much too vulnerable.
“…Intelligence agencies and security companies have connected Russian hackers to the shutdown of a German steel mill, the cutting off of phone and Internet service to some 900,000 Germans, and most ominously, two disruptions of the power grid in Ukraine,” writes Knake, adding, “Just how vulnerable is the U.S. grid to an attack akin to the one in Ukraine? The creation of a Critical Infrastructure Network (CInet), proposed by the Global Resilience Institute (GRI), would provide a separate, secure communications network for critical infrastructure owners and operators. CInet would allow the government to share classified threat intelligence with approved partners in the private sector. It could also be used to move operational communications off the public Internet and to restore communications in the event of a widespread Internet outage.
