On the 19th Anniversary of 9/11, we remember the lives we lost and the incredible stories of sheer bravery from the American people, who stood resilient in times of adversity. Additionally, one of the untold stories of that day stands out as the largest maritime evacuations in history. Around 500,000 civilians were evacuated through from Lower Manhattan in less than 9 hours. The evacuation was possible due to the American public’s rapid response to a call for help by the Coast Guard. The event is a true testament of people selflessly coming together, even when their own life is at risk, to support their community. The fearless story of the maritime evacuation has received the attention it deserves primarily due to the short film ‘BOATLIFT – The Untold Story of 9/11’, executive produced by GRI’s Founding Director, Dr. Stephen Flynn and Sean Burke.
