Al-Shabab’s Capabilities Post-Westgate

Written in response to al-Shabab's September 2013 attack on Nairobi's Westgate mall, this article examines the nature of the organization and the threat it continues to pose. Additionally, it describes the current state of al-Shabab, including historical troubles and the resulting evolution of its tactics, structure, and recruitment processes. It finds that al-Shabab is simultaneously weaker and more dangerous than it once was, particularly in East Africa and the Horn.
