An Agencywide Strategy May Help EPA Address Unmet Needs for Integrated Risk Information System Assessments

The Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) is an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-developed database containing information on the toxicity of certain chemicals and their potential effect on humans. This report examines how the EPA manages this database and the extent to which it evaluates demand for additional IRIS assessments. It recommends that the EPA should evaluate and document demand for IRIS assessments and suggests the agency could do a better job of coordinating across offices to fill gaps in the database.
