This article examines media coverage to compare approaches towards the development of smart grids in the United States and Canada. One of the main differences found was that Canadian newspapers frequently focused on how smart grids were being implemented, and user experiences, while US media coverage focused on the private sector. Specifically, the U.S. coverage emphasized the commercial and technological opportunities. The concept of smart grids was generally framed more positively in the U.S. than in Canada, where greater attention was given to the possible risks.
