Engineering Meets Institutions: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Management of Resilience

In this publication, Aldrich highlights the three main perspectives surrounding resilience (engineering, social, and organizational) and how an interdisciplinary approach must be taken if communities want to be successful in the future. By using three cases studies which include Fukushima and the actions that caused it, the current infrastructure and its shortcomings in southwest Bangladesh, and the potential for improvement of current irrigation institutions in Nepal. Aldrich uses these case studies to illustrate how collaboration from varying disciplines can come together to create and implement better, more advanced resilience systems to not only reduce the impact of future natural disasters, but also minimize damage and recovery time.
