Impacts of Severe Space Weather on the Electric Grid

The report, prepared for the Department of Homeland Security, discusses the threat space weather poses to electric grids, satellites, and GPS systems on Earth, in light of recent solar patterns and storms. The report examines the current status of solar observations, warnings, and predictions, the possibility of a worst-case scenario disablement and destruction of the U.S. power grid, previous examples of space weather affecting the power grid, and options to protect the grid at a reasonable cost.
