A challenge for those looking at extreme flooding events, which can cause severe damage and threatens to become more common in the future, is that there is a lack of hydrological measurements. This article looks at historical, botanical, and geological archives to find evidence of extreme riverine flood events and assesses how these records have improved and could further improve flood hazard assessments, flood management, and mitigation plans.
