Large Power Transformers and the U.S. Electric Grid

Topics: Energy, Critical Infrastructure Theory, Policy and Practice,

This report describes the process of procuring and supplying large power transformers (LPTs), which are custom designed equipment that can cost millions of dollars and requires high skilled manufacturing. LPT’s are critical, high cost, and difficult to procure, with lead times up to 20 months long. These units are vital to the US electric sector, and the failure one unit can cause service interruption and collateral damage. The report argues LPTs are a vital consideration in creating a more resilient power grid and recovering after a disaster.
