Lessons Learned: Social Media and Hurricane Sandy

Recognizing the critical role that social media plays in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery, the US Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate established the Virtual Social Media Working Group (VSMWG) in 2010. The VSMWG’s goal is to provide communities with best practices for social media use during all phases of an emergency. This report by the VSMWG focuses on how social media was used during Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, and was developed in conjunction with the public safety community.
