On the Unique Features of Post-Disaster Humanitarian Logistics

This research paper identifies and explores seven key components of post-disaster logistic activity in an attempt to better understand how the system as a whole operates. It examines them in scenarios in which supply chains remain largely operational and in which they have been destroyed, as well as similarities and differences between commercial and humanitarian logistic activity after a disaster. It finds that not only are there vast differences between commercial and humanitarian logistics, but there are wide gaps between short-term and long-term recovery efforts of the latter, and therefore each must be studied and treated differently.
