Severity, Probability, and Risk of Accidents During Maritime Transport of Radioactive Material

Topics: Homeland Security Theory Policy and Practice, Supply Chain, Transportation,

This report is the result of a collaboration between the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to study the risks associated with marine transportation of radioactive material after several accidents in the 1990's. Working groups met to analyze whether the current regulations were adequate, assess the risk of accidents at sea, and publish their findings. The results provided a measurement of the probability of a severe accident which might release radioactive material in a port per each ship movement of a standard cargo vessel.
