Smallholder Agriculture and Climate Change

Topics: Food and Agriculture,

This research contrasts the impact of climate change on smallholder agricultural systems with other agricultural systems and populations. Using mapping and a literature review, it suggests that smallholder farmers, which feed hundreds of millions across the globe, are inherently vulnerable to climate variability. The consequences of disruptions to such systems could, the authors assert, be devastating to the populations which rely on these enterprises for sustenance and a livelihood. The piece concludes with recommendations to researchers and policymakers to enable smallholder agricultural systems to adapt more effectively to climate change.
