Social Media in Emergency Management: A Quick Look

This report is the result of a study into the use of social media in emergency management situations prepared for the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate. It looks at the three main uses of social media: a channel for public service announcements, a source of information, and a means to ‘crowdsource’ capabilities. It then uses these findings to outline ways emergency managers may effectively use social media moving forward.
