The Role of Groceries in Response to Catastrophes

Topics: Emergency Management, Food and Agriculture, Healthcare and Public Health, Supply Chain, Critical Infrastructure Theory, Policy and Practice,

This research paper examines the effects of catastrophes on supply chains, and focuses on increasing the resilience and recovery time of grocery supply chains that supply critical goods such as water, food, pharmaceuticals, and medical supplies. Currently, disaster management largely ignores supply chain resilience, instead depending on filling the gaps with replacement supplies, which often fail to meet demand. The study finds that the main problems lie with distribution and delivery, and outlines possible solutions to delivery problems.
