Toward an empirical research agenda for sustainability in higher education: exploring the transition management framework

Topics: Communications,

This paper recognizes the lack of cohesion in existing sustainability research in higher education, and endeavors to explore an alternate method through the framework of ‘transition management,’ a “multi-scale, multi-actor, process oriented approach and analytical framework to understand and promote change in social systems.” There are two main, stated goals to this research: (1) to inform prioritization of an empirical research agenda in the field, and (2) to enhance understanding of the interface between organizational change and social change related to sustainability. The paper outlines the current state of sustainability research in higher education, outlines the transition management framework, and considers the limitations of this alternate framework.
