This document analyzes the security implications of an increase in Additive Manufacturing (AM), also referred to as 3D printing, by looking the history of this technology and it’s current state. This document also analyzes current uses of 3D printing, from the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) effort to increase innovation through a $30 million pilot institute focused on AM, to criminals producing technology with 3D printers to steal debit card information at ATMs.
