Understanding and Managing the Complexity of Urban Systems Under Climate Change

This article examines urban areas' increasing strain on the environment and its reciprocal strain on urban areas. Specifically, it analyzes traditional urban assessments in contrast with newer, more nuanced ones which account for socioeconomic, institutional, and political factors to provide insight into the complexity of such structures as a whole. It uses this evaluation to assert that rather than base adaptive decisions on one future projection, policymakers should be prepared to anticipate and manage a variety of diverse scenarios, considering the dynamic nature of urban systems.
