Tropical Storm poses threat to New Orleans and the rest of Louisana

Tropical Storm Barry, the first tropical storm to threaten the U.S. this year, is expected to make landfall in Louisiana on Saturday, June 13. Parts of the state have already experienced the effects of this storm, seeing nine inches of rain and winds of over 40 miles per hour. Extreme flooding is occurring throughout the New Orleans area with even more on its way. The storm is slow moving, at a speed of only 5 miles per hour, and is expected to bring further rain and flooding to the area. The National Weather Service predicts the storm surge will add up to five feet of additional water to the Mississippi River, reaching a height of around 20 feet. Floodwalls and levees in place in New Orleans are only equipped to reach 20 feet, making this storm a threat to the infrastructure and resilience capabilities of the city.

Tropical Depression Imelda brings extreme rainfall and flooding

Tropical depression Imelda made landfall on Southern Texas last month, causing extreme rainfall and “major, catastrophic flooding” across several counties in the region. This storm comes about 2 years after the devastation wrought by Hurricane Harvey, which had 38% higher rainfall than expected, a result researchers have attributed to atmospheric conditions resulting from climate change. Both storms have followed a trend of increasing rainfall due to warming air temperatures.

Torrential rain, floods paralyze Albania; 1 person dead

At least one person died during heavy rainfall that flooded many parts of Albania, paralyzing its ports and causing flights from its only international airport to be suspended, authorities said Friday. Three other people were injured and 314 homes were destroyed in weather-related incidents over 24 hours, the government said in a statement. Schools remained closed nationwide. Many roads remained blocked across the Balkan country, while some 127,000 residents were affected by power cuts. Albania's army and health ministry used helicopters Friday to evacuate people from flooded areas.
