The role of social capital, personal networks, and emergency responders in post-disaster recovery and resilience: a study of rural communities in Indiana | Global Resilience Institute

This paper details the various aspects of societal resilience integral to post-disaster recovery. Through a mail survey, researchers studied the effects of higher social capital, personal networks, and emergency responders on recovery times in rural Indiana communities affected by devastating tornadoes in 2013. The results of the study conclude that in this case, households with higher levels of societal resilience, including dense personal networks, higher levels of trust in government, and previous disaster experience, were likely to recover more quickly than others.
