Critical Infrastructure Resilience
The infrastructure systems that provide critical functions to communities and enterprises, such as energy, water, communications, transportation, and healthcare, are becoming increasingly interconnected. This trend has accelerated with the extension of internet connectivity into these systems to facilitate their being monitored and controlled remotely. As a result, natural and man-made disasters such as hurricanes and typhoons, deluges and floods, heat waves and droughts, earthquakes and volcanoes, as well as cyber-attacks and acts of terrorism can now cascade in ways that threaten enterprises, communities, and societies at regional, national, and even global levels.
For nearly two decades, the Global Resilience Institute has led efforts to investigate man-made and naturally occurring disasters for lessons that can support communities in preparing for these events. We have organized and led workshops that bring together infrastructure owners and operators, emergency managers, corporate executives, and public officials in developing and deploying practical and affordable resilience solutions. Our Integrated Resilience Enhancement Solution (I-RES) process identifies multi-dimensional infrastructure vulnerabilities and guides investments in mitigation measures, informs emergency response, and supports the prioritization of actions to accelerate the recovery and adaptation of critical infrastructure when disasters strike.
